Madonna has joined the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) new “Love Conquers Hate” T-shirt campaign in support of Russia’s beleaguered lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
It isn’t the first time that the Material Girl, 55, has spoken out in defense of Russia’s LGBT residents. During a St. Petersburg show on her MDNA World Tour, she urged fans to “show your love and appreciation to the gay community.” She then added, “We want to fight for the right to be free,” Reuters reported at the time.
She was later sued by a coalition of anti-LGBT groups for more than $10 million for “moral damage suffered by St. Petersburg residents” during her performance. That lawsuit was later dismissed.
The Queen of Pop penned a poignant email to HRC members:
Dear fellow equality supporter,
“Love conquers hate.” It’s an iconic message that the Human Rights Campaign’s members and supporters have spread to millions around the United States.
But right now in Russia, LGBT people and our allies who support basic fairness and dignity face a different reality. They are being targeted by hateful new laws that outlaw support for LGBT equality. Even with the 2014 Sochi Olympics just a few months away, fair-minded Russians are facing fines, harassment, and violence at the hands of thugs.
At this dangerous moment in Russian history, we as advocates have a responsibility to speak up and take our hopeful message global. That’s why I’m joining HRC’s Love Conquers Hate campaign, in hopes that more and more fair-minded people around the world will stand up and fight against the Russian government’s campaign of hate.
Right now, you can send that message directly to the Russian people and provide much-needed support to LGBT advocates in Russia by purchasing the Russian-language Love Conquers Hate t-shirt. And once you have your t-shirt, share a picture of yourself wearing it on social media using #LoveConquersHate. With your help, we can make this simple message go global.
Make no mistake about it: the goal of these hateful laws is to leave LGBT Russians feeling isolated. Worthless. Completely alone.
Together, we can send a message to LGBT Russians that the world is on their side, and that those who seek to support them aren’t alone in this fundamental fight for fairness.
It’s time for love to conquer hate everywhere, for everyone. I hope you’ll stand with me in this fight.
Madonna is teaming up with bosses at Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s Aids Foundation for a soccer initiative to raise awareness of the disease in Africa.
The Queen of Pop’s Raising Malawi organisation and the late Hollywood legend’s charity will join forces with the Grassroot Soccer program, which helps educate youngsters about Hiv prevention and testing through the power of the hugely popular sport.
The Material Girl says, “I’m excited to partner with The Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation to expand Grassroot Soccer’s HIV prevention programs in Malawi.
“I’m passionate about education especially and these programs give girls and boys the tools they need to live healthier, more productive lives. Elizabeth Taylor was a role model for many, including myself!
“She devoted a large part of her life to making the world a better place. I know she would be pleased to see her work continue in the fight against AIDS.”
Reaching out to her followers on Instagram, Madonna posted the following image:

J/P Haitian Relief Organization, along with founder and CEO, Sean Penn, welcomed Madonna and her son, Rocco, to the J/P HRO-managed Petionville Camp in Port-au-Prince, Haiti earlier this week where she witnessed firsthand J/P HRO’s progress in the Haiti reconstruction effort. During their visit, Madonna toured the J/P HRO camp, where there are now less than 2,000 residents in the once tent-city of 60,000 internally displaced citizens, and met with senior program managers, visited its medical facilities, community center and engineering projects and spent time at a J/P affiliated school to connect with students. She also took a tour of the site of the national palace, which J/P HRO cleared last year, and then visited the slums of Cite Soleil.
Through Instagram, Madonna engaged fans in her experience in Haiti, posting photos of the country’s inspiring children and various locales such as the beach of Ile-a-Vache, an island off the southwestern peninsula of Haiti. She encouraged fans to support J/P HRO programs which provide health care, education, construction and the safe return to permanent housing for displaced earthquake survivors residing in the Petionville Camp. This week, Penn launched his own Instagram to raise awareness of J/P’s continuing efforts in Haiti: http://www.instagram.com/seanpenn
‘The progress that has been made in Haiti is extraordinary, but it’s clear there is so much more to be done,’ said Madonna. ‘I’m very inspired by J/P HRO’s dedication and long-term commitment to the families and children of Haiti. What Sean and his organization have done is truly remarkable. They are paving the way to a brighter future for thousands of people. It’s vital that the world stays on course with the reconstruction of Haiti.’
‘I was very proud to introduce Madonna and her son to the work we are doing in Haiti,’ said Sean Penn. ‘It is my hope that more people will visit Haiti and see for themselves the beauty, spirit and potential of this great country.’
Madonna’s Ray of Light Foundation is expected to join forces with J/P HRO on their continuing support for the citizens of Haiti. Details will be announced at a later date.

Lady Gaga and Madonna have a superstar rivalry made in gossip-blog heaven. The former burst onto the scene five years ago with a provocative pop sensibility reminiscent of the latter’s. Last year, Madonna accused Gaga of ripping off one of her songs; this year, the “Born This Way” singer insisted she doesn’t want the Material Girl’s throne.
From an earnings perspective, however, there’s no question over the winner of this battle’s latest round. The honor goes to Madonna, who pulled in $125 million over the past year, making her the highest-paid musician in the world. The bulk of Madge’s millions came from the tail end of her MDNA Tour, which grossed $305 million. She augments her income with heady merchandise sales at concerts, as well as her Material Girl clothing line and Truth or Dare fragrance.
